What is Logotherapy?

  • Logotherapy was founded by Dr Viktor E. Frankl (1905 – 1997).
  • The underlying most fundamental thread of Logotherapy is that life has meaning under all circumstances.
  • Logotherapy calls us to action by asking not what we may expect from life, but rather to understand that life expects something from us.
  • We have both the ability and the freedom to responsibly choose how we would respond to this challenge.
  • Logotherapy is an encounter that offers us an opportunity to find our own unique meaning through what we give to the world (creativity), what we receive from the world (experiencing) or the attitude we take when facing a situation.
  • Logotherapy awakens us and encourages us to become aware of new possibilities, challenges and meaningful moments in spite of suffering.
  • To prove this point experientially, Frankl was forced to live and use his theory whilst incarcerated in a concentration camp at the end of World War II. Through this incredible hardship when everything was done to deprive prisoners of anything that made their lives worthwhile, Frankl’s greatest discovery was born. With the correct attitude we can find meaning in our lives even if we are facing a fate that cannot be changed.
